Where We Came From

Where It Should Evolve

Integration of Old and New Chicano Power

Chicano Power has always been about unity, pride, and justice—values that have driven generations to stand up for cultural identity, equal rights, and social justice. From the struggles of farmworkers to the fight for education and political representation, our journey is rooted in courage, resistance, and resilience. Now, as we look ahead to 2025 and beyond, Chicano Power must evolve, blending the wisdom of the past with the innovation of the future.

Honoring the legacy of the old chicano power

We stand on the shoulders of those who fought before us: leaders like César Chávez, Dolores Huerta, and Rodolfo “Corky” González, who sparked the Chicano Civil Rights Movement. Their efforts shaped the foundation of our movement, and their spirit continues to guide us. The core principles of cultural pride, community solidarity, and social justice remain as relevant today as they were then.

The power of the old movement lies in its roots—a fierce commitment to our identity and rights. But, just as the Chicano community has always adapted to changing times, so too must Chicano Power evolve to meet the challenges and opportunities of today’s world.

Embracing a new era of Chicano Power

The future of Chicano Power isn’t just about looking back at what we’ve accomplished—it’s about building forward. We are at the intersection of a new era, where digital technology, economic empowerment, and global solidarity are reshaping the landscape of activism and advocacy. Here’s how we can move forward while staying true to our roots:

  1. Digital Empowerment for a Global Community
In today’s world, digital spaces are where movements thrive. We must continue to expand platforms that connect Chicanos across borders, whether through online communities, social media campaigns, or digital storytelling. These platforms give us the power to share our stories, organize for change, and amplify our voices—just as our ancestors did in the streets and town halls.

  2. Economic Empowerment Through Innovation
The Chicano community has long fought for economic justice, but the next step is economic independence. By supporting Chicano-owned businesses, investing in startups, and nurturing entrepreneurs, we can create jobs and drive wealth within our communities. This new chapter of Chicano Power is about breaking barriers and building our own futures—whether that’s through tech, creative industries, or sustainable agriculture.

  3. A Unified Political Force
As Chicanos, we must continue to claim our place at every level of government, from local councils to Congress. But in the digital age, this also means creating think tanks, policy groups, and political organizations that push for change on our terms. It’s about elevating our voices in politics, not just participating, but leading the charge for justice, immigration reform, education equity, and more.

  4. Cultural Renaissance and Global Solidarity
Chicano artists, musicians, filmmakers, and writers have long used their work to express identity and challenge injustice. The new Chicano Power will continue this tradition while expanding the global reach of our culture. By building alliances with other marginalized communities, we can create a unified global front for justice and equality, sharing our culture, values, and stories with the world.

A MOVEMENT FOR ALL GENERATIONS

This new chapter of Chicano Power is not about replacing the old movement—it’s about building on its foundation and making room for innovation. The elders of the Chicano movement brought us to this point, and their wisdom will continue to shape our direction. The younger generation, with its fresh ideas and digital fluency, will help us evolve.

But it’s not just about the old or the new—it’s about unity. Both generations must come together, respecting the struggles of the past while embracing the possibilities of the future. We must build a Chicano Power that is inclusive, adaptable, and committed to the same values of self-determination, pride, and justice that have always been at the heart of the movement.
