John Abravanel Berdugo, a proud Calo/Ladino/Spanish/Hebrew/Slang speaking native of the unincorporated area of East LA, he is of Mexican, Native American and Sephardic background. He has dedicated his time to uplifting the Chicano community. His formative years were shaped by the growing up in a Chicano neighborhood and attended schools with predominantly Chicano kids. The EastLA Chicano riots and Ruben Salazar (The Silver Dollar) were always in the background of my perception, instilling in him a deep commitment to social justice. Despite facing significant educational challenges, including being placed in special education/needs for handicapped students due to a speech impediment and attitude issues, John left home at 17, put a tattoo on his stomach, flunked a grade and was involuntarily removed/transferred from three high schools and one continuation school. Ultimately, he graduated from Vail Continuation High School in Montebello, went on to earn a college degree, and participated in several teenage bodybuilding competitions to overcome his physical disabilities.
After being chased around by Deputy Steve McLean, East LA Sheriff’s Station, Steve became a mentor. John subsequently dedicated 29 years to the California Department of Corrections, advancing through the ranks to become one of the youngest sergeants at 24 yrs old. He was also one of the youngest lieutenants in the state at just 27 years old. He supervised high-profile units, including the Sexual Violent Predator Unit, Use of Force State Coordinators, Institution Gang Unit, and Lifer Unit, while also handling notable public interest cases. Additionally, he served as a trainer and participated in extensive tactical training on and off duty. .
After retiring medically due to an injury sustained in the line of duty, John was appointed Executive Director of the Israel Foundation, where he met with elected officials to educate them on Spanish and Mexican (Sephardic) Jewish issues. He then embraced entrepreneurship, founding Abravanel Capital Holdings, through which he purchased, rehabilitated, and sold real estate for a profit. John solely successfully applied for, financed, built, validated, and passed ISO 17025 laboratory certification without any prior laboratory or chemistry background, establishing U.S. Cannabis Laboratories, during COVID-19 experiencing ever possible setback and tenants not paying rent for up to 3 years 6 months due to a moratorium on evictions due to not paying rent. He is currently building another lab called US Forensic Laboratories.
Driven by his passion for media and community involvement, he launched Chicano.Media and EastlA.Media where he is building a TV, News and Radio platform for Chicano creators.
